APV World Wide – Japan

A GK 300 S for sowing rice? Although this was not originally one of the implement’s traditional applications, it was successfully put into practice in Hokkaido in the spring of 2026. This marked the first time the GK 300 S had been used in Japan for dry direct sowing of rice – with impressive results and potential for further applications.

GK S in the rice field: premiere in Japan

On 7 May 2026, the APV Grassland Combi for slit seeding (GK S) was used on a farm in Nakafurano, Hokkaido (Japan), for the dry direct sowing of rice. The ‘Nanatsuboshi’ rice variety was sown at a rate of 90 kg/ha to a depth of 0.5 to 1 cm. The precise placement of seeds was particularly impressive: the seeds were placed cleanly in the seed furrows, forming even, clearly visible rows. The subsequent crop development also went very well. The farmer emphasised that the even rows create good conditions for aeration and light penetration. As the growing season progressed, the crop continued to develop very well under favourable weather conditions.

From rice to winter wheat

This first deployment demonstrates the potential of the GK 300 S even beyond its originally intended applications. The next deployment in Hokkaido is scheduled for this autumn: the implement is then to be used for sowing winter wheat. Further opportunities arise through funding schemes. Japanese farmers can apply for grants for such implements under certain conditions – including through regional programmes for replanting and programmes aimed at improving operational efficiency.

Hokkaido – Agriculture on a grand scale

Hokkaido occupies a special position within Japanese agriculture. Whilst Japan as a whole is characterised by limited arable land and relatively small-scale farms, the northernmost main island is home to larger farms equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Hokkaido is also a major centre of Japanese agricultural production. Rice has traditionally played a central role in Japan. At the same time, farms are open to technologies and processes that can make workflows more efficient – an interesting environment for new applications of APV technology.

New applications, new opportunities

From dry direct-drilled rice to the sowing of winter wheat: the GK 300 S’s debut demonstrates that different cultivation methods and regional requirements can open up entirely new areas of application for existing APV technology. It is precisely these kinds of applications that make the outlook for international APV markets particularly exciting.
