APV combines slit seeding and broadcast seeding in a single intelligent system

With the combination of the GP 750 S, a 1,600-litre FrontTank and the SMART TWIN 500, APV offers a high-performance solution for grassland management and cover crop seeding. The system combines precise seed placement with intelligent smart farming functions such as Section Control and Variable Rate Control. This ensures that inputs are used efficiently, area productivity is increased and crop yields are optimised sustainably.

With the combination of the GP 750 S, FrontTank 1600 litres and the SMART TWIN 500, APV presents a high-performance solution for professional grassland management and cover crop seeding. The system enables slit seeding and broadcast seeding to be carried out simultaneously in a single pass and combines maximum area coverage with state-of-the-art smart farming technology.

The new 1,600-litre FrontTank unit, developed in-house, supplies the GP 750 S for slit seeding. The precise placement of the seeds in the slit ensures optimum contact with the soil, guaranteeing that the seeds are reliably supplied with moisture and can emerge more quickly. Meanwhile, the sward remains largely intact. Slit overseeding offers significant advantages over purely surface seeding methods, especially under dry conditions, with denser stands or during limited windows of rainfall. Precise placement reduces competitive pressure from the existing sward, improving the sustainable establishment of valuable grasses.

Meanwhile, the SMART TWIN 500 handles the broadcast seeding of reseeding mixtures, cover crops, fertiliser, soil conditioners and micro granules. Thanks to the split seeding shaft, the left and right sides of the machine can be controlled independently. This enables control of the application rate for sub-areas on the implement itself as well as site-specific adjustment.

Section Control reduces overlaps

Both the GP 750 S and the SMART TWIN feature ISOBUS-based Section Control technology. Headlands, wedges and overlap areas are automatically detected. The machine can switch sections or machine halves on and off independently. This prevents double sowing, saves seeds and ensures uniform field emergence.

Variable Rate Control for maximum cost-effectiveness

With Variable Rate Control, seed application is carried out automatically according to stored maps of the area to be sown. High-yield zones receive the optimal seed rate, while weaker areas receive a reduction based on need. This reduces input costs, improves crop stand development and increases the profitability of the process.

Convenient ISOBUS and load-sensing operation

The entire machine combination can be conveniently operated via the tractor’s existing ISOBUS terminal. Additional control units are unnecessary, keeping operation clear and intuitive. In conjunction with the load-sensing hydraulics, only the required amount of oil is supplied. This reduces fuel consumption, protects the hydraulic components and ensures a consistently high level of performance.

This new APV combination combines the agronomic benefits of precise slit overseeding with state-of-the-art smart farming technology. This results in higher emergence rates, lower seed consumption, greater field capacity and a more economical use of valuable operating resources.

In practice: slit and broadcast seeding in the Southern Black Forest

A practical trial as part of the project“Water, Soil, Agroforestry” in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park is currently demonstrating how the combination of slit and broadcast seeding performs under demanding conditions.

At the recommendation of renowned grassland expert Hans Koch, APV has provided a Grassland Pro Harrow GP 750 S for slit seeding, as well as a FrontFrame with SMART TWIN for additional broadcast seeding.

At Stephan Hamburger's farm, the emergence of the APV solution in the field is being compared with that of other systems. The current dry conditions provide particularly interesting prerequisites for this comparison. Through targeted placement in the soil, the seed aims to make optimal use of existing moisture, while additional broadcast seeding complements the row spacings of the slit seeding.

The trial also takes into account different driving speeds. After around four weeks, there will be a joint field inspection, during which the emergence of the different variants will be assessed and documented. These results will provide valuable practical insights into the efficient renovation of grassland and overseeding under increasingly challenging conditions.
